Stoatley Rough School was founded by Dr Hilde Lion in 1934 as a mixed boarding school, mainly for refugee children from Nazi Europe. It was recognised by the Ministry of Education in 1940. After World War Two, a number of British pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds were sent to the school by local authorities. It was also attended by private boarders.
